Deepfake

Deepfake (synthetic media)

Synthetic audio, image, or video generated by AI to impersonate a real person, often used in impersonation-driven fraud or defamation campaigns.

Definition

Deepfakes are synthetic media (audio, image, video) generated by machine-learning models trained to impersonate a real person. Deepfake generation has become commoditized: consumer tools produce convincing audio clones from thirty seconds of training data and short video impersonations from a handful of source frames. Common malicious uses include: CFO-voice impersonation to authorize fraudulent wire transfers, executive-face video calls to socially engineer a subordinate, and non-consensual intimate imagery used for extortion or defamation. Deepfake detection is an active but unreliable field — high-quality synthetic media routinely passes detection tools, and detection accuracy degrades as generation models improve. LeakTrace does not claim deepfake detection as a service; the honest posture is to monitor for the distribution channels (platforms where deepfake content typically surfaces against a principal) and to package chain-of-custody evidence when a suspected deepfake is discovered for counsel to pursue removal or attribution.

Why it matters

Family-office principals, athletes, and public-facing executives are the highest-value deepfake targets. LeakTrace surveillance covers the distribution surfaces (dark-web marketplaces, reputation-attack forums, platform impersonation accounts) where deepfake content typically appears, rather than claiming to detect the synthetic nature of the media itself.
