spf=none

As the standard prints it.
01

What does it mean?

Without an SPF record, a mail server cannot tell which servers may send as your domain.

02

What exactly does the source say?

none: The domain doesn't have an SPF record or the SPF record doesn't evaluate to a result.

03

Why would a small firm see it?

The domain never had one, or it was lost when the domain moved to a new DNS host.

04

How do I fix it?

  1. List every service that sends mail as your domain.
  2. Publish one TXT record at the domain itself, starting v=spf1, with an include for each service and ~all or -all at the end.

Keep one SPF record. Add the service inside the one record you have, before its last word, and keep every service already in it. A second SPF record makes the check fail for every message.

An SPF record may make at most 10 DNS lookups. Each include counts, and so do the includes inside it. Past 10 the check fails, so take out services you no longer use before adding a new one.

05

What else do the sources say?

spf=<pass (IP address)|fail (IP address)|softfail (reason)|neutral|none|temperror|permerror> smtp.mailfrom=<domain>

A result of "none" means either (a) no syntactically valid DNS domain name was extracted from the SMTP session that could be used as the one to be authorized, or (b) no SPF records were retrieved from the DNS.
