Cyber insurance application · End of life software

How do I answer the cyber insurance question about end of life software?

One form asks whether you run any software its maker no longer supports, and if so what it is, how it is used and whether it is kept apart from the rest of the network.

01

What exactly does the form ask?

These are the form's own words, with the page they come from.

Do you have any end of life or end of support software?

If yes, please provide details on what the end of life or end of support software is, how it is used, whether it is segregated from the rest of the network and, if so, how it is segregated:

02

What does it mean for a small firm?

End of support means the maker has stopped sending security updates. Old operating systems, old accounting packages and old firewalls are the usual cases.

03

How do I answer it truthfully?

Check each operating system and major program against its maker's support dates. Where one has ended, say what it does and how it is kept apart.

04

What can an outside reading show, and what can it not?

Where a service on the internet states its software version, an outside reading can match that version against published flaws.

It cannot see software that does not face the internet.
