Cyber insurance application · Website tracking tools

Why does a cyber insurance form ask about tracking tools on my website?

One form asks whether you use, or have ever used, tools that record what visitors do on your website, and names several.

01

What exactly does the form ask?

These are the form's own words, with the page they come from.

Do you currently use, or have you previously used, any code, software, tool or other technology that tracks, collects or otherwise records website visitor activity, including, but not limited to, Flash Cookies, TikTok Web Beacon, Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Microsoft Clarity or any similar tracking tool or technology?

02

What does it mean for a small firm?

These are scripts on your pages that send visitor activity to another company, for analytics or advertising. Web designers often add them without being asked.

03

How do I answer it truthfully?

Check your analytics and advertising accounts, look at the page source of your main pages, and ask the company that built your site what it added. Tick every tool, past or present.

04

What can an outside reading show, and what can it not?

The scripts your public pages load today can be seen by anyone in the page source.

What your pages loaded in the past cannot be seen from outside now.
