How did my password end up in a data leak?
Usually because a website or app you signed up to was broken into. Its list of accounts was copied and shared. Less often, you typed the password into a fake sign-in page, or a program on your device recorded it. Change it wherever you used it.

What does it mean for you?
When a site is broken into, its account list often ends up online. MITRE describes what happens next.
Occasionally, large numbers of username and password pairs are dumped online when a website or service is compromised and the user account credentials accessed.
Could it have come from somewhere else?
Yes. A message can send you to a page that looks like a real sign-in screen. CISA describes the trick.
Phishing occurs when criminals try to get us to open harmful links, emails or attachments that could request our personal information or infect our devices.
What should you do?
- Change the leaked password on every account that used it.
- Turn on two-step sign-in, starting with your email.
- Run your device's security updates and a malware check if you also see strange pop-ups or settings.
- Sign in by typing the site's address yourself, never through a link in a message.
Where is the change made?
Each account named, in its own security or password settings. Your email account settings come first, because a reset link for every other account goes there.
What else do people ask about this?
Did my phone or computer get hacked?
Usually not. Check your device only if other signs point to it, such as pop-ups or settings you did not change.
Why do I keep getting leak warnings?
Each new breach of a site you used adds a warning. Unique passwords mean one leak affects one account only.
