Questions · For you

What happens if my email was in a data breach?

Your address was in the records a website or service lost. On its own that mostly means more spam and phishing. The risk grows if a password leaked with it: anyone can then try that password on your other accounts. Change it wherever you used it and turn on two-step sign-in.

01

What does it mean for you?

The breach happened at the service, not on your computer. What matters is what was taken with your address. Google explains why a leaked password and address together are unsafe.

Compromised passwords and username combinations are unsafe because they've been published online.

02

What should you do?

Change your passwords right away for your online accounts affected by the breach.

  1. Find out which breach listed your address and what it exposed.
  2. Change the password on that account.Change it on every account where you used the same one.
  3. Turn on two-step sign-in for your email first, then your bank and shopping accounts.
  4. Expect more spam and phishing.Do not click links in messages about the breach. Go to the site yourself.
  5. Use a password manager so each account has its own password.
03

Where is the change made?

Each account named, in its own security or password settings. Your email account settings come first, because a reset link for every other account goes there.

What else do people ask about this?

Can someone get into my email just from my address?

Not from the address alone. They need your password too, or a way to trick you into giving it. That is why a unique password and two-step sign-in matter.

Should I delete my email account?

Usually not. Securing it is enough. A new address does not remove the old one from breach records.
