Cyber insurance application · Account lockout

What does a cyber insurance form mean by an account lockout policy?

One form asks whether accounts lock after a number of wrong passwords, for every user and every system that gives a way in, and asks for the number.

01

What exactly does the form ask?

These are the form's own words, with the page they come from.

Do you enforce Account Lockout policies for all users?

If "Yes", provide the lockout threshold setting:

02

What does it mean for a small firm?

A lockout stops someone guessing passwords without limit. The form names email, firewall, VPN and other remote access.

03

How do I answer it truthfully?

Read the lockout setting in the mail service, the VPN and the firewall. Give the number of tries. If one system has no lockout, the answer for all users is No.

04

What can an outside reading show, and what can it not?

An outside reading can see whether a remote desktop port, a file sharing port, or a VPN or other remote-access login page answers from the internet on your domain and its host names. Those are where a lockout matters most.

It cannot see the lockout setting, and an outside reading tries no passwords.
