01

What happened?

A security researcher showed in October 2020 a way to scrape large amounts of data from Gravatar, a service that supplies avatars across the web. Names, usernames and hashed email addresses were scraped and shared among hackers. Many hashes were cracked, revealing the real email addresses. Gravatar later published an FAQ about the incident.

  • Your email addressemail addresses

Expect messages that look like they come from this service or another one you use, written to get you to click a link or sign in on a fake page.

  • Other detailsnames and usernames

On their own these carry less risk, but they make a scam message sound more personal.
